A severe storm accompanied by stormy and sometimes hurricane-like wind gusts hit Zagreb this morning, causing serious problems in traffic and the daily functioning of the city.
Due to dangerous weather conditions, a decision was made that there will be no classes in primary and secondary schools today. As announced by the competent institutions, the measure was introduced for the safety of students, especially in traffic.
For children who cannot stay at home, a stay in schools will be organized, while kindergartens work regularly, with the recommendation to parents to keep their children at home if they are able.
Warnings throughout Croatia
Storm warnings have been issued throughout Croatia, and the highest level – a red warning – is in effect for the Zagreb and Rijeka regions, as well as for Istria.
According to DHMZ data, strong to stormy gusts of north and north-easterly winds were recorded in the Zagreb region, sometimes reaching up to 90 kilometers per hour.
Citizens received alerts on their cell phones
This morning, the residents of Zagreb received messages on their mobile phones via the SRUUK system, which warns citizens of dangerous weather phenomena and gives recommendations for behavior in crisis situations.
Collapse in traffic and damage to infrastructure
The storm also caused great difficulties in traffic, especially in the eastern parts of the city, where the tram network was damaged. Because of this, there were delays and changes in public transport.
The City of Zagreb and the competent services announced that teams are on the ground and are working on repairing the damage, while citizens are advised to be extra careful and avoid unnecessary movements while unfavorable weather conditions last, it says. Radio Sarajevo.
