The United Nations requested that the investigations that Israel leads to the recent deadly attacks in Gaza, including the Nasser bombing in which life lost at least 20 people, including concrete results and clearly identifies responsibility.
The incident that occurred on Monday involves two consecutive explosions that hit the last major public hospital in South Gaza.
According to the witness statements, another stroke followed only a few minutes after the first, while the emergency teams and journalists were trying to evacuate the wounded. That other attack was fatal for several media workers, including reporters who worked for Reuters, AP, Al Jazeera and independent media.
The UN Human Rights Spokesperson, Thameeen Al-Kheetan, pointed out that the number of killed journalists in Gaza opens serious issues on the safety of media professionals and targeting civilian facilities.
Israeli authorities confirmed that the military conducted an internal investigation into the attack, while the Office of the Prime Minister is expressed “regret due to a tragic incident”. According to the first military reports, the attack was allegedly focused on the surveillance camera near the hospital, which they claim to have used Hamas, and suggests that they were “terrorists” among the killings. However, the explanation was not offered why medical workers and journalists were affected.
The UN expressed concern that this investigation could remain without concrete results, as it happened with a number of previous cases. The organization of actions against armed violence recently published data according to which almost 90% of the military investigations on alleged war crimes in Gaza ended without any consequences. Among these cases, the deadly incidents from February and May 2024, in which dozens of civilians were killed.
The UN and international organizations re-appeal to transparency, justice and determining responsibilities to interrupt, as they state, pattern impunity.
