According to Prague International Radio, Okamura, head of the Freedom and Direct Democracy Party (SPD), issued the order shortly after taking office. The flag, which had flown alongside the Czech and European Union flags since February 2022, was removed by parliament staff.
Former parliament speaker Markéta Pekarová Adamová reacted strongly, calling the move a “shameful act” that contradicts the values shared by the Czech Republic and Ukraine.
The decision was also condemned by the leaders of the opposition parties, pointing out that it weakened the country’s solidarity with Ukraine and its pro-Western orientation.
While the Ukrainian flag was removed, the Israeli flag, installed in October 2023, remained on display alongside the Czech and EU flags.
Okamura’s SPD party recently formed a coalition government with the ANO movement, which won last month’s elections, and the right-wing Motorists Party.
