French authorities detained two policemen on suspicion of raping a 26-year-old woman in the Paris suburb of Bobigny on Wednesday night, Paris police chief Patrice Faure and prosecutors confirmed. The case is being investigated by the Internal Police Inspectorate (IGPN).
According to prosecutor Eric Mathais, the victim was previously detained on suspicion of “parental neglect”, reports the French news agency AFP.
Paris police chief Faure announced on the X social network that the suspects were immediately suspended and detained. According to sources familiar with the case, the two policemen, aged 23 and 35, were in the service for a relatively short time.
In a separate case, French judicial authorities will next year try another police officer accused of raping a woman at a police station in the Seine-et-Marne department in 2023. The victim is allegedly an Angolan citizen who then wanted to report domestic violence.
France has faced a series of sexual violence cases in recent years that have sparked a major public debate on the issue of consent. Among the most famous is the case of Gisela Pelicot, who was drugged and raped by her husband for years, and numerous other men also participated in the attacks.
The increase in the number of reported cases prompted lawmakers to further tighten the definition of rape. The new law, adopted this week, defines rape as any sexual act without express consent.
