US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he has asked the Justice Department to investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged ties to JP Morgan and several prominent Democrats, including former President Bill Clinton.
The request comes after a congressional committee released thousands of documents that raised new questions about Trump’s relationship with a convicted sex offender.
In addition to Clinton, who was friends with the late financier in the early 2000s, Trump said he requested an investigation of former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, who is also a known donor to the Democratic Party.
– Epstein was a Democrat and this is a Democrat problem, not a Republican problem – Trump wrote on social networks.
– Everyone knows him, don’t waste your time on Trump. I have a country to lead – he added.
The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
JP Morgan said in an emailed response: “We regret any association we had with this man, but we did not assist him in the commission of his heinous acts. We severed all ties with him years before his arrest on human trafficking charges.”
Trump claims he cut ties with Epstein a long time ago
Trump and Epstein were friends in the 1990s and 2000s, but Trump claims he severed ties before Epstein’s conviction in 2008.
The constant release of documents highlighting their relationship has been a headache during Trump’s second term.
In 2023, JP Morgan paid $290 million to some of Epstein’s victims to settle allegations that it turned a blind eye to his human trafficking.
Unpleasant revelations
The other people Trump mentioned were not immediately available for comment. So far, no credible evidence has been found that they were involved in Epstein’s human trafficking, and all have previously denied any wrongdoing.
Clinton flew on Epstein’s private jet several times before his conviction in 2008, with Hoffman and Summers in his company.
All three expressed regret for their relationship with him.
While polls show nine in 10 Republicans approve of Trump’s performance in the White House in general, only four in 10 approve of his handling of the Epstein dossier, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in October.
