To the cantonal prosecutor’s office of the Tuzla Canton, experts in the field of electrical engineering and fire protection submitted their findings and opinions about the causes of the fire in the Tuzla Retirement Home. As a result of the fire, 15 people died, and more than 30 people were injured. Autopsies on the bodies of the two women who died last night will be performed shortly.
The cause of the fire was stated in the finding and opinion of the electrical expert. It was caused by a short circuit on the conductors of the connecting cable of the radio receiver, which at the time of the fire was plugged into a plug, squeezed between the mattress on the bed, the wall and the metal part of the bed in the room of one of the residents of the Tuzla Retirement Home. The main cause is first the mechanical and then the thermal load of the cable.
The expert’s findings and opinion on the causes of the fire are the initial part of the investigative actions that are being carried out and will be carried out in the future in order to determine responsibility and omissions, in order to collect facts on whether the consequences could have been avoided or reduced.
The Prosecutor’s Office of the TK formed an investigative team in which two prosecutors and a team of investigators are investigators of the SKP MUP of the TK. The team is already conducting investigations and collecting evidence in order to establish the relevant facts.
The investigation will be extensive and detailed. All the circumstances of the occurrence of the fire, i.e. the entire cause-and-effect relationship, responsibility and failures in work, as well as all the facts related to the safety and fire protection measures taken or not taken in the building, will be checked.
The investigation is aimed at establishing criminal responsibility, that is, elements for the existence of a well-founded suspicion that officials or responsible persons (or some other persons) have committed criminal acts. The investigation was initially founded and related to the criminal offense of serious criminal offenses against the general safety of people and property in connection with the criminal offense of causing general danger, resulting in the death of several persons, as well as to the criminal offense of negligent work in the service.
During the investigation, prosecutors will issue warrants and orders for all investigative actions that are necessary in the process of gathering evidence.
Also, there will be extensive and detailed expertise, which will be worked on by a team of expert experts, construction and architectural professions and fire protection, which will include numerous parameters for checking security mechanisms and fire protection in the House.
Witness hearings are ongoing. All relevant material documentation that will help to see the bigger picture during the conduct of investigative actions will be exempted.
