Luke Littler (17) is the new world champion in darts, the amazing teenager defeated three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen in the final with 7:3 in sets.
Littler thus became by far the youngest world champion, and the current record holder was precisely Van Gerwen, who won his first title in 2014 at the age of 24.
The young Englishman confirmed his favorite status in the final against an opponent 18 years older and reached a convincing victory with a dominant performance. Although he didn’t have a much higher fielding average (102.73 vs. 100.69), Littler was much more successful in his exits (55.56% vs. 36.84%).
At one point, it looked like Littler’s victory could be even more convincing because he started the match with a 4:0 lead, but Van Gerwen still managed to pull himself together and at least make it a little more difficult for the teenager to celebrate. He did not do more than that and suffered his fourth defeat in the seventh World Cup final, while Littler, after last year’s second place, has now gone all the way.
Thanks to the victory in the final, Littler will earn half a million pounds, which will climb to the second place in the world ranking. Luke Humphries, who beat Littler in the final last year, is still on top.
