Former player, coach and president of the Široki Brijeg Football Club Zdravko Leko died at the age of 79.
The club said goodbye with a touching announcement which we transmit in full:
Our blue family, unfortunately, lost another dear member. On Thursday evening, at the age of 79, our former player, coach and president of the Široki Brijeg Football Club left us forever, and primarily a passionate fan – Zdravko Leko.
All his life, soul and heart, he was strongly attached to Pecara, to his Široki Brijeg and his successes. Older fans remember him as a very grateful and self-sacrificing player who defended the colors of Mladost as a midfielder or right half in the late sixties and seventies.
He stayed in Mladosta until he left for studies. In the 1972/1973 season he used to come from Zagreb only for matches to help his teammates in the fight for points and victories for his local club. Also, he was a favorite among Zagreb students as a great soccer player in the team with the Hrkać brothers, Anton Samovojski…
We will forever remember the late Zdravko for his undisguised joy and elation after the success of Široki Brijeg and his love for the local club, which he passed on to his children and grandchildren.
What kind of passionate fan and player he is is best evidenced by the information that he will be according to his personal wishes buried in Široki Brijeg’s tracksuit.
There will be a farewell to our dear deceased on Saturday, January 18 at 2 p.m in front of the city morgue in Široki Brijeg. The family will receive condolences at the mortuary from 1:15 p.m. Burial will be announced at the Mekovac local cemetery.
