The Kremlin said on Monday that it hoped another summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump could take place as soon as necessary preparations were completed.
Putin and Trump last met in August at a summit in Alaska, where they discussed a possible solution to end the war in Ukraine.
They announced plans for a summit in Budapest last month, but Trump soon canceled it, saying the timing was “not right.”
When asked whether Moscow missed an opportunity and under what conditions a new Putin-Trump meeting could be held, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: “It is difficult to predict now when those conditions will arise. However, of course, we are all interested in those conditions appearing as soon as possible.”
He added that both sides agreed that the summit requires deep preparations to be productive.
– Therefore, we hope that it will take place as soon as the preparations are finished and the conditions for the summit are met – he added.
In announcing the cancellation of the Budapest summit last month, Trump again expressed his frustration with Putin, saying: “Every time I talk to Vladimir, the talks are good, and then they go nowhere.”
On Sunday, Trump said that US Republicans were working on legislation that would impose sanctions on any country that does business with Russia – something that, according to Peskov, would greatly upset Moscow.
– We will see how that law will progress and what details are included. Of course, we would take a very negative attitude towards that – he said.
Trump has already significantly increased tariffs on Indian products, citing India’s purchases of Russian oil, which Moscow has described as an illegal trade squeeze.
