The European Commission announced that Member States may implement their own national prohibitions for juveniles on social networks, in new guidelines within its powerful Digital Services Act.
The EU executive has been under pressure in recent months to introduce measures to protect juveniles on the Internet. National governments in France, Denmark, Spain and other countries have called on social networking constraints, and some criticized the EU that does not work fast enough.
France and the Netherlands supported a complete ban on social networks for juveniles under the age of 15. Greece announced that he believes that the children would be needed for children in the younger age. Denmark, currently leading work in the EU Council, advocates stronger shares at EU level.
The technological giant target also suggested legal restrictions that would require parents to agree to the use of their children on social networks below a certain age.
– The age check is not something nice. It is absolutely necessary – said Denmark Minister for Digital Policy of Caroline Stage Olsen, who presented guidelines together with the head of the Henk Virkunen Technology Commission.
The new guidelines for the Protection of Minors on the Internet aim to ensure that the platforms face a similar set of rules across Europe within the Law on Digital Services (DSA), the milestone regulations of the Social Network Block. The guidelines are not binding and set a measure for the Companies for interpretation of the DSA requirements.
The Commission also published the Technical Specifications for the Genu AD application that could help verify whether users are older than 18 years of age using identification documents, and even facial recognitions. The application will be tested in France, Greece, Spain, Italy and Denmark, five countries that also advocate restrictions and work on their own asset checks, writes Avaz.
