The Dayton Peace Agreement was signed in the American city of Dayton on November 21, 1995, which ended the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina after three and a half years.
During the three and a half years before the signing of this document, more than 100,000 people were killed in the war, and more than a million inhabitants were displaced.
Also, during this war, the first genocide was committed on European soil after the Holocaust, in the city of Srebrenica, where in July 1995, members of the Republika Srpska Army killed more than 8,000 Bosniaks.
The Dayton agreement itself, which was signed by Alija Izetbegović, Franjo Tuđman and Slobodan Milošević, was preceded by extremely difficult negotiations that lasted more than two weeks.
During the negotiations in Dayton, the current structure of BiH as a country of two entities was designed, although it was stated that our country continues to exist legally just like the Republic of BiH, which declared independence in 1992.
It is also worth noting that the Dayton Peace Agreement was formally signed on November 21 in Dayton, but that the ceremonial signing was held in Paris on December 14 of the same year.
The signatories of the Dayton Peace Agreement were the Republic of BiH, FR Yugoslavia (on behalf of Bosnian Serbs) and Croatia (on behalf of Bosnian Croats). The guarantor countries, or witnesses, are the USA, Russia, Germany, France, Great Britain and the European Union.
Before this agreement, and as one of the key events before the actual signing, Izetbegović and Tuđman signed the Washington Agreement in March 1994, which significantly facilitated the negotiation process in Dayton.
