The fire that engulfed the Tuzlan Pensioners’ Home on Tuesday is an unprecedented tragedy since the war. 10 people lost their lives in the fire that occurred on the seventh floor of this institution. It was confirmed from this institution.
As they announced, in the fire that engulfed the Tuzla Retirement Home (seventh floor of the Institution) at around 20:45 last night, according to still unconfirmed information, 10 users died and around 20 people were injured. With a quick intervention, the fire was brought under control and extinguished by members of the Professional Fire Brigade Tuzla, with the support of the Professional Fire Brigade Srebrenik, and the voluntary fire brigades Gornja Tuzla and Tuzla and the Police Department of the MUP TK. Members of the SHMP of the Health Center Tuzla provided medical assistance to the users from the endangered floors, after which they were taken to the lower floors of the Institution. The medical staff of health centers in Lukavac, Srebrenik and Kalesija also provided medical assistance to the vulnerable. Injured patients were treated at UCC Tuzla, and among the injured, in addition to users of the Institution, there are also members of the police, firefighters, medical workers, as well as employees of the Tuzla Retirement Home. The latest information from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Turkey is that 10 people died, residents of the Retirement Home in Tuzla, while about 20 people (firemen, policemen, medical workers, employees and residents of the Retirement Home) were treated in the JZU UKC Tuzla. The bodies of the victims will be transferred to the Memorial Center for identification and autopsy.
Although the reaction of all rescue teams was quick and thorough, unfortunately, it was not possible to help everyone. We remind you that this is an institution that cares for people of the third age, among them there are also semi-mobile and immobile people. The floor where the fire broke out was occupied by immobile persons and seriously ill patients.
Throughout the night, all the protection and rescue services were at the scene, those who were on duty, and crews arrived from houses to help. Citizens also joined them, considering that the Pensioners’ Home is located almost in the center of the city, so everyone quickly organized themselves and came to help.
The latest data indicate 20 injured. However, during the night, according to the statements of the mayor of Tuzla, Zijad Lugavić, and members of the Emergency Medical Service, it was determined that this number was even higher, around 35 people requested medical assistance. The inmates were quickly evacuated, relatives and friends came to pick them up, and some of them spent the night on the safe and conditional floors of this facility.
The mayor of Tuzla thanked everyone who selflessly provided help in extinguishing and evacuating citizens. He announced that this morning the extent of this disaster will be considered and the next steps will be defined. An extraordinary session of the Tuzla City Council has been announced for 8 o’clock, at which we also expect concrete information about the future actions of the authorities.
An investigation team is at the scene, the investigation will be carried out when the conditions are met, in order to determine the cause of the fire and all other facts of importance for the investigation.
