The Spanish first league team Real Sociedad, for which Croatian national team members Luka Sučić and Duje Ćaleta-Car play, announced on Saturday evening that their new coach is Pellegrino Matarazzo (48).
The American coach, of Italian origin, signed a contract for a year and a half.
He came to Real Sociedad in order to gave a new impulse to the teamannounced the club from the Basque Country, which is in 16th place among the 20 clubs in the Spanish league.
Matarazzo, who was born in New Jersey, began his coaching career in the junior categories of Nuremberg, Germany. In 2017, he moved to Hoffenheim, where he was assistant coach to Julian Nagelsmann, with whom he participated in the Champions League. Two years later, he made his debut as a head coach, taking over the second division Stuttgart, with which he entered the first division. After leaving Stuttgart, he returned to Hoffenheim, where he stayed until November 2024.
Real Sociedad is a week ago sacked coach Sergio Francisco who has been on the bench since the summer. He was fired after three consecutive league defeats. Real Sociedad played 1-1 away to Levante on Saturday, and the team was temporarily led by youth coach Jon Ansotegi.
Croatian midfielder Sučić played until the 70th minute, while defender Duje Ćaleta-Car remained on the reserve bench. Both have played little lately and are hoping for a change under new coach Matarazzo, whom the club will present in San Sebastian on Sunday.
