Four people are dead after 14 people were shot at a family gathering in Northern California on Saturday night, police said. The Guardian.
Heather Brent, spokeswoman for the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, said the victims of the Stockton shooting included both children and adults.
“Approximately 14 people were hit and four victims are confirmed deceased,” the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said on social media, adding that information about the shooting remains limited.
Sheriff: Early leads point to a targeted shooting
The sheriff’s office said detectives are “working to determine the circumstances that led to this tragedy.”
“Early indications suggest this may be a targeted shooting, and investigators are looking at all possibilities,” they added.
The shooting happened at a child’s birthday party, Stockton Deputy Mayor Jason Lee said in a Facebook post.
“I am in contact with the staff and public safety services to determine exactly what happened, and I will insist on answers,” he stated.
Several people were transported to the hospital
Police said they received reports of a shooting near the 1900 block of Lucile Avenue in Stockton, about 50 miles east of San Francisco, just before 6 p.m.
The shooting took place inside a banquet hall that shares a parking lot with other business establishments.
Authorities did not immediately provide additional information on the condition of the victims. Earlier it was confirmed that several people were transported to the hospital.
“We urge anyone with information, video or who witnessed any part of this incident to contact the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office immediately,” police said.
The office of California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the governor had been informed of the shooting.
