The Kamo Wildlife Sanctuary in Whangarei, New Zealand, is closing permanently due to financial difficulties, the facility’s management has announced. Due to the closure, seven lions had to be euthanized.
– We had no other option. We are all completely devastated – said shelter director Janette Vallance. The lions were between 18 and 21 years old, which is above the average age in the wild.
The administration explained that it was not possible to move the animals to other zoos because there is no free capacity.
– The memory of these extraordinary creatures will remain in the hearts of many – they said from the institution.
The Kamo Sanctuary became famous thanks to the television show about the lion trainer Craig Busch, known as “The Lion Man”. Later, Busch was charged with animal cruelty. The zoo also made headlines in 2009 when a white tiger killed a keeper.
