Adnan Imamović belongs among rare watermelon producers in Tešnji, an area that is not typical of the breeding of this summer treat. However, its production is successfully placed on the market, although facing challenges such as labor shortages and outdated machinery.
“This climate is not characteristic of the production of watermelons, but in that and it is the point of produce something that doesn’t matter, my old manses – Pradjed Rahmetli Imamović Avdo, and here, I produce watermelon too,” Imamovic said.
Adnan breeds six varieties of watermelons on an area of 20 Dulum, which corresponds to almost 50 basketball courts. He expects this year’s crop to exceed 60 tons of watermelon and about three tons of melons. Although the kilogram of his watermelon is twice as expensive than in shopping centers, he claims no problem with the placement.
“You will not believe, we have no second of sales problems. All we win, sell. People come from all neighboring villages, and even from other municipalities to buy our watermelons,” Imamović added.
Production assistance offers him family and friends, including Armin Sinanovic:
“The goal is to produce a domestic product that is placed as quickly, because until the watermelon comes from other parts, he passes several days and is losing freshness and quality,” Sinanovic said.
However, the manufacturer warns that the competent in BiH agriculture often perceive as a social activity, not serious production. Imamović points out that he would love more programs for more favorable procurement, because the tractor currently uses old is almost 50 years.
“Notwithstanding the challenges, watermelon production is still successful and appreciated in our area, but for long-term sustainability, more competent support is needed,” Imamović concludes.
