The boat with 154 Ethiopian migrant was sunk in the early morning on Sunday, along the coast of the southern Yemeni province of Abyan, Abdusattor Esoev, the head of the International Migration Organization (IOM) in Yemen, for Associated Press.
He added that the bodies of 54 migrant flooded the coast in Khanfar district, while another 14 bodies were found and transferred to the Hospital in Zinjibar, the capital of Abyan, on the south coast of Yemen.
Esoev stated that only 12 migrants survived the shipwreck, while the rest of the water as disappeared and they are thought to be dead.
Two health workers confirmed that the survivors’ quest is still lasting.
The International Organization for Migration points out that Yemen continues to record a significant increase in the number of irregular migrants coming from Africa.
Every year, migrants cross the Great Al-Mandab Strait, which separates Djibouti and Eritrea from Yemen, often in insecure and overcrowded boats, hoping to arrive to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries, seeking employment.
IOM describes this migrant route as “one of the busiest and most dangerous mixed migrant routes in the world.”
According to their data, more than 60,000 migrants arrived in Yemen last year.
