Roščina’s Ukrainian journalist’s body returned Russia in February as part of the exchange on the forest road, among the remains of 757 Ukrainian victims, writes Guardian. In the documentation with the body, only “NM Spas 757” was written, which was interpreted as a “unidentified man” with severe damage to cardiac arteries.
It turned out to be Roščina, a 27-year journalist, one of the most prominent civil benefits from the beginning of the Russian invasion. It was captured in the summer 2023. Near the Zucronius Nuclear power plant, during its fourth research task in occupied territory. She was the only Ukrainian journalist who then crossed the battlefield line to reveal Russian blocking media information.
Roščina was detained without an indictment and without access to the lawyer, and her only contact with the outside world was a four-minute phone connection with his parents a year after the disappearance.
Numerous traces of torture
Preliminary forensic analysis indicates “numerous traces of torture”: burns on the feet from electroshocks, head and hips injuries, broken ribs, shaved hair and broken shimber, injuries associated with suffocation. When exchanging the body, the brain, eyes and laryngs, which further complicates the determination of the cause of death.
War crimes investigation is in progress, and Guardian and partners, including Ukrainian justice, reconstructed her last task. Its goal was to reveal the network of secret prisons where civilians torment to recognize cooperation with Ukrainian authorities.
Roščina left Ukraine 25. July 2023, traveling through Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, entered Russia and continued towards Melitopolis. He soon went missing. Her father reported the disappearance, and the information was later confirmed by witnesses from Taganrog prison.
She fell to 30 pounds remained immovable
One of the witnesses, her former cell room from the cell, described brutal tortures to which Roščina was exposed: Electrical shocks, stabs with a knife, open wounds and psychological abuse.
After moving to the infamous part for Sizo 2 detention in Taganrog, her health care quickly exacerbated. According to testimonies, she stopped eating, was falling into delirium, was exhausted and eventually immovable.
Roščina’s weight fell to only 30 kilograms. He was taken to the hospital under the strict supervision of armed guardians, but after a few weeks was returned to prison.
“Itself is to blame”
In April 2024. The family finally received the official confirmation that he is alive in the form of a brief letter of the Russian Ministry of Defense. At the beginning of August, journalists called the parents and said, “I promised me that I would be home in September … I love you.” It was her forgiveness.
Date 13. September, when a group of 49 prisoners arrived from Russia, Roščina was not among them. A few days earlier, she was performed from the cell and prepared for the exchange, but did not arrive until the agreed point. One officer said, “It’s fault itself.”
At the end of her month, her father was reported to die in 19. September. When the body was finally returned, it was in such a state that identification was not possible without the bottom of the analysis. A label was found on the leg with a hand printed name “VV Roščina”.
Although the director of prison in Taganrog has repeatedly claimed that she “was not in their database”, witnesses, autopsies and traces of torture speak the opposite. Her father is still looking for answers.
