Russian crypto millionaire Roman Novak, previously convicted of a multimillion-dollar fraud, was kidnapped and killed in the United Arab Emirates along with his wife Anna after a failed extortion attempt.
A couple is lured into a fake business meeting that turns into a deadly kidnapping in order to take control of his digital assets, reports CryptoSlate.
A fatal meeting and a brutal murder
Roman Novak was a household name in St. Petersburg, where he defrauded investors out of millions of dollars through various crypto projects. After he was sentenced to six years in prison for fraud in 2020, he moved to Dubai. There, he launched a new crypto app, Fintopio, and reportedly raised hundreds of millions from new investors.
In early October, Novak and his wife set out to meet with alleged investors near the town of Hatta, not far from the UAE-Oman border. However, after changing vehicles and firing their driver, they disappeared without a trace.
Investigation and arrests across two states
Since there was no contact for days, Novak’s family alerted the authorities. Russian and Emirati authorities launched an investigation, suspecting that the couple had been lured to the rented villa under false pretenses.
The kidnappers tried to force Novak to hand over access to his substantial cryptocurrency assets, which were allegedly held in digital wallets linked to his app and previous scams.
When they failed to come up with the money, the outcome was tragic. Roman and Anna were killed, and according to Russian media sources, their bodies were found dismembered in dumpsters near the Hatta shopping center. Soon after, seven suspects were arrested in the UAE and Russia, including several people from St. Petersburg and one from Kazakhstan.
They face charges of murder and financial crimes. Anna’s father and stepmother traveled to Dubai to take care of the couple’s minor children, who were orphaned.
The Dark Side of Cryptocurrency
The murder of Roman Novak and his wife is a brutal reminder of the dangers lurking in the world of cryptocurrencies and the alarming increase in so-called “wrench” attacks – physical attacks aimed at extorting digital assets.
Security expert Jameson Lopp previously told CryptoSlate that “showing off your personal wealth on platforms like Instagram while owning cryptocurrency is one of the most dangerous things you can do.”
Digital wealth creates new targets and vulnerabilities where criminal intent meets decentralized finance. This case highlights the need for constant vigilance and strong safeguards for all investors. In the wake of the murder, Russian and international authorities are stepping up efforts to crack down on cross-border crime related to crypto scams and violence, while the search for all those responsible continues.
