British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves said on Tuesday she will do what is necessary – not popular – to protect the country from high inflation and high interest rates as she considers whether to raise taxes in the Nov. 26 budget.
In a rare pre-budget speech, Reeves said her annual fiscal report would be “for growth with equity at its heart and a budget that supports businesses to create jobs and innovate”.
– As I make decisions on taxes and spending, I will do everything necessary to protect families from high inflation and interest rates – she said, adding that it will be “to protect our public services from a return to austerity and to ensure that the economy we leave to future generations is secure and the debt under control”.
