“In order to build a partnership based on the truth and good relations, we must address the issue of the German state, which, as a Polish president, I unequivocally demand,” Nawrocki said.
The president added that “compensation is not an alternative to the historical oblivion” and that Poland, as a state of front and as the most important country on the eastern wing of NATO, should justice, truth and clear relations with Germany, but also financial compensation from the German state.
These statements to Nawrocki presented during the ceremony on the Westerplatte peninsula in northern Poland, where 86 years ago the shelling of the German battle ship Schleswig-Holstein marked the beginning of the Second World War in Europe. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and High State officials and ministers were also attended at the ceremony.
In his speech, Tusk focused on the current security challenges and the need to clear the enemy and allies. Westerplatte described as a “holy place” to give honors to national heroes and a reminder that Poland should never be a victim of foreign aggression again.
