Tusk said earlier this week that Hungary has become the poorest country in the European Union because of corruption and Orbán’s attempts to build an authoritarian regime modeled after Russia.
“You know, I don’t want to name that country because it is a member of the EU and NATO. But it is a former communist state that was faring much better than Poland in 1989. Today that country has fallen very low,” said Tusk.
“And the main reason? My long-time friend Viktor Orban, once a pro-European liberal democrat, suddenly decided that it would be better to build an authoritarian model somewhat along the lines of Russia. He seems to be fascinated by Moscow lately,” he added.
He warned that corruption becomes a civilizational problem when organized from the top down, adding that Hungary is now following the examples of corrupt Russia and Belarus.
Orban responded to him via the X social network:
“Prime Minister Donald Tusk has launched another attack on Hungary. He is doing so because he has serious problems at home. His party lost the presidential election, his government is unstable and he is trailing in the polls.
Together with Manfred Weber, he became one of the loudest warmongers in Europe. But his war policy is failing: Ukraine is running out of European money, and the Polish people are tired of war. He cannot change course because he has turned Poland into a vassal of Brussels.
Now he is in a panic, persecuting his political opponents and criticizing Hungary’s peace stance in an attempt to divert attention from his own domestic problems. That’s really sad.
The historic friendship between Hungary and Poland deserves better. I cannot and will not support Mr. Tusk’s warmongering. Hungary follows a different path — the path of peace. The Hungarian people refuse to become a vassal of Brussels. It’s time for Mr. Tusk to accept it and go about his business,” Orban wrote.
