Niko Kovač is one of the candidates for the bench of the German giant and the current European vice-champion Borussia Dortmund, reports Florian Plettenberg, Sky Sports correspondent for the Bundesliga.
Plettenberg writes that German Roger Schmidt, who was recently fired from Benfica, and Erik ten Haag, who was kicked out of Manchester United, are also candidates. Nuri Şahin was fired after poor results in the league and currently the team is led by the youth coach Mike Tullberg.
He is a blacksmith without a club since March 2024, when he was fired from Wolfsburg. In the past months, he was linked with French Rennes, German second division HSV, Shabab Al Ahli from the United Arab Emirates, Dinamo after the dismissal of Sergej Jakirović, and even Liverpool, which he himself denied, and recently rejected an offer from Turkish Beşiktaş.
Won four trophies in Germany
Kovač was a midfielder and captain of the Croatian national team and played almost his entire career in the Bundesliga. He played for Hertha, Bayer Leverkusen, HSV, Bayern and RB Salzburg, where he ended his career in 2009. He won three trophies with Bayern and two with Salzburgwrites Index.hr.

He started his coaching career in Salzburg, after which he managed the U-21 and A national teams of Croatia, then Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern, Monaco and Wolfsburg. He won the German Cup with Eintracht, shocking Bayern in the final. On the bench of the Munich club, he won the Bundesliga, the National Cup and the Supercup.
