Manchester City’s new setback: Haaland missed a penalty in the draw against Everton

Manchester City and Everton players opened Boxing Day and the 18th round of the English Premier League at the Etihad.

Both teams reached one point after the match ended in a 1:1 draw. Bernardo Silva scored for the home team, while Iliman Ndiaye scored for the visitors.

Pep Guardiola’s players opened the game better, and they paid for it with a goal by Silva assisted by Jeremy Doku already in the 14th minute of the game. The current champions of England failed to double their advantage, so the penalty came in the 36th minute when Ndiaye checked Stefan Ortega with a shot from about 10 meters diagonally after a bad reaction from Manuel Akanji who failed to clear the danger. It was 1:1 at halftime.

The citizens started attacking from the very beginning of the sequel.

Already in the 51st minute, Vitali Mikolenko missed a penalty with a foul on Savinho, and two minutes later, Erling Haaland tried to turn it into a goal. Unfortunately for the home fans, Jordan Pickford saved his shot. In the continuation of the action, the Norwegian scored a goal, but from offside, so it remained 1:1.

With this save, the goalkeeper of the English national team became the first goalkeeper in the Premier League to save two penalties this season and the first to save Haaland’s penalty in the competition. His only previous failure from the penalty spot in 16 attempts was in 2023 when he missed the target against Sheffield United. For Haaland, it was the fourth penalty he took this season, and his performance dropped to 50% because he also missed against Sporting in the Champions League, reports Index.

The score did not change until the end of the game. With the point won, City at least temporarily overtook Aston Villa in sixth place in the table at the expense of a better goal difference, but they continued a streak of five games without a win in all competitions, while in the last 13 they have only one triumph.

After the third draw in a row, Everton is currently 15th with 17 points won.
