Recall, at the Infectious Clinic of the University of Sarajevo, ten patients with symptoms that point to leptospirosis, an infectious disease transmitted by rodents have been treated over the past days.
The first cases were recorded in the area of the Sarajevo municipality of Novi Grad, specifically in the settlement of Dobrinja, where citizens began to report to doctors with the symptoms of the disease.
Leptospirosis is a contagious disease caused by bacteria from the genus Leptospir. It is most often transmitted by contact with water, food or soil contaminated urine infected animals, especially rodents. The bacterium enters the body through damaged skin or mucous membrane – eyes, nose and mouth.
Symptoms include high temperature, headache, muscle pain, fatigue, vomiting, in severe cases may damage the liver and kidneys as well as the development of meningitis. If not treated on time, leptospirosis can have serious health consequences, including the death outcome.
