Footballers from Lens, Lyon, Nice, Montpellier and Rennes won the round of 16 of the French Cup.
Lens routinely beat Sochaux 3-0, and the scorers were Odsonne Edouard (22), Matthieu Udol (87) and Abdallah Sima (89). The difference in quality between the leading squad of Ligue 1 and the third division team was obvious.
The most interesting match of the evening was played in Lille, where Lyon beat the host with 2-1. The visitors took the lead in the first minute with a goal by Afonso Moreira. Lille equalized in the 28th minute through Nathan Ngoy, but in stoppage time Endrick, who had just arrived from Real Madrid, scored to give Lyon the win. In the second part of the net, they didn’t shake anymore, although Lille hit the post in the 88th minute.
As a guest, the second division Montpellier outclassed Metz with 4-0, and the scorers were Teji Savanier (8 – from a free kick from 111 meters!), Yanis Issoufou (21), Enzo Tchato (46) and Nicolas Pays (64).
Rennes overcame fourth-tier Chantilly 3-1. Evans Joseph put the hosts ahead in the 42nd minute and the key moment came in the 68th minute when Chantilly were down a man after Sambou Yatabare was sent off. Rennes equalized with a goal by Quentin Merlin, Mousa Tamari brought the game back a minute later, and Elias Legendre confirmed the visitors’ victory in the 78th minute.
In the match between the second division, Le Mans beat Nancy 4-1 after a better penalty shootout, as the match ended goalless. Penalties also decided the match between Nantes and Nice, in which it was 1-1, and Nice won 5-3.
Earlier, Monaco, Troyes, Amiens, Toulouse, Reims, Lorient and Strasbourg qualified for the round of 16.
A city derby between Paris Saint-Germain and Paris FC is expected on Monday, while Bayeux and Marseille will face each other on Tuesday.
