Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that US President Donald Trump abandoned the principles that, according to him, were discussed during the meeting in Alaska.
The comments of the head of Russian diplomacy come after Trump in recent days called for an immediate end to the conflict in Ukraine, according to the German news agency dpa.
Speaking to the Hungarian YouTube channel Ultrahang, Lavrov assessed that the new approach of the US administration marks a “radical change” in relation to previously agreed positions. According to his statements, during the summit in August, the American side advocated the achievement of a comprehensive peace agreement, rather than an immediate cessation of hostilities.
Lavrov cited pressure from European countries and Ukraine as the reason for the change in American policy. He added that President Vladimir Putin accepted the initial proposals of the US, which envisaged a permanent peace as a basis for further talks.
– Moscow remains consistent with its position that a ceasefire can only be considered when a comprehensive agreement on peace is reached – Lavrov said.
Recently, Trump has increasingly openly expressed his displeasure with the Russian bombing of Ukrainian cities. In addition to calling for a quick de-escalation, he also announced a new package of sanctions against Russia, which provoked sharp reactions from Moscow.
