Jürgen Klopp is still not interested in returning to coaching after just over a year as Red Bull’s global head of football, media quoted him as saying on Monday.
The former Liverpool boss was in the stands during RB Leipzig’s 5-1 Bundesliga defeat by Bayern Munich on Saturday, but his interest in the Red Bull project, which includes teams around the world, has not waned.
– I know I can coach a football team, but that doesn’t mean I have to do it until my last day. I wanted to do something different – the German told the New York Times/The Athletic during a meeting with the media at the Bayern match.
– Red Bull gave me the opportunity to find a role that we define together, step by step. As a person I am in a state where I am completely at peace with where I am. I don’t want to be somewhere else – he said.
He has been criticized in some quarters for hiding in the background while sacking Red Bull coaches, such as friend Marco Rose at Leipzig last year.
– I recently heard that I’m a ‘Totengräber’ – gravedigger for coaches, but that’s the last title I ever want to have – he said.
– It is an advisory role, but with power – he added.
Asked by Transfermarkt about links with Real Madrid following the recent sacking of Xabi Alonso, Klopp said: “It’s all just media hype.”
– It’s Real Madrid; Jupp Heynckes was fired there even though he won the Champions League. I don’t know what that says about Real Madrid – said Klopp.
