American tennis player Madison Keys won the Grand Slam trophy in the singles competition for the first time in her career by defeating the two-time winner of this tournament, Belarussian Arina Sabalenko, in the final of the Australian Open.
It ended 6:3, 2:6, 7:5 in two hours and two minutes.
Keys played in the finals of Grand Slam tournaments for the second time in her career. In her first attempt in 2017, she was defeated in the US Open final by compatriot Sloane Stephens.
By winning the Australian Open, she took the biggest cash prize from a single tournament in her career.
The Australian Open has increased the prize pool this year as well. Compared to last year, it was 12 percent, so all tanners earned more. Prize money in men’s and women’s competitions are equal. Keys earned 3.5 million dollars with her triumph in Melbourne. Sabalenka received a cash prize in the amount of 1.9 million dollars.
