The first day of January brought a rich program in the lower leagues, and it was particularly interesting in the Championship, where matches were played that attracted the attention of the regional public as well.
Two meetings stood out in particular. Sergej Jakirovic’s Hull City faced Stoke City while Swansea, co-owned by Luka Modric, took on West Bromwich Albion.
Swansea recorded a narrow 1-0 win while Hull lost by the same scoreline.
At the start of the match, Hull City was in fourth position in the league table while Stoke was in 11th place, which made the host a slight favorite.
However, the guests were more specific in the first half and confirmed their advantage in the 39th minute when the 26-year-old Slovakian striker Robert Bozenik shook the Hull net.
The second half brought a great fight and dramatic moments after a serious injury to Bozenik, for which the referee awarded even 17 minutes of injury time.
Despite time for a possible turnaround, Hull were unable to find a way to score.
Sergej Jakirović’s team thus started the new year 2026 with a defeat, while Stoke took away valuable three points away from home.
Amir Hadžiahmetović entered the game in the 89th minute, but he also failed to change the course of the match.
