The development of settlements in the E1, an open part of the country east of Jerusalem, is considered more than two decades, but it was frozen due to the US pressure during previous administrations.

The Israeli government is dominated by religious and ultranationalist politicians, such as Smotrich, with close connections with the immigration movement.
