The worst storm in Jamaica’s modern history is about to end.
In the capital city of Kingston, the winds are starting to die down, but the storm is not over yet. Authorities are urging residents to stay in their shelters until sunrise.

The “eye” of Hurricane Melissa has passed over Jamaica, but its tail can still cause damage. The National Hurricane Center warned that an additional 7 to 15 centimeters of rain could still fall on the island. This would lead to rainfall totals in some areas, especially the mountainous parts of the central part of the island, of over 60 centimeters.
– What we have seen is truly catastrophic, especially in the municipalities west of Kingston. The infrastructure has been destroyed, and some communities will probably be isolated for days – CNN journalists said.

Hurricane Melissa’s maximum winds reached 185 mph on Tuesday, tying the storm with four other hurricanes as the second strongest storm in the Atlantic Ocean since 1851. Only Hurricane Allen in 1980 had winds stronger than 190 mph.
