The program has a mandate to support the educational content and the activities of genocide over Bosniaks in Srebrenica, including the celebration of the International Day and Commemoration of Genocide in Srebrenica – 11. July, which is officially marked on the global level since this year.
The first official commemoration in the UN
Central commemoration on the occasion of 30 years of genocide was held on 8. July 2025. in the UN General Assembly in New York. The event was attended by survivors, families, members of the Association of Mother Srebrenica and Zepa, the UN High Officials, Member States, civil society and numerous guests.
On behalf of the UN Secretary, Antónija Guterres, the Head of the Earle Courtenay Rattray, was also spoken by the BiH Presidency of the Mother Srebrenica Munira Subašić and the young representative of the Memorial Center Srebrenica Mirela Osmanović. The emotional tone of the event additionally gave sixteen-year-old violinist Umić, which carried out part of the composition “Srebrenica Inferno”.
Official commemoration in Potocari
On the day of the anniversary, 11. July, the traditional commemoration and collective jenny were held in the Potocari Memorial Center. In the Name of the UN, Rosemary Dicarlo, the pronoun of the UN Secretary-General for Political and Peace issues, was transferred to the Laptop. He also attended the UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilization, Miguel Ángel Moratinos.
Two exhibitions at the UN headquarters
There are two exhibitions at the UN headquarters in New York in the marking open:
“From Word to Violence: The lives behind the fields of death” (17. June – 26. August 2025) – Documents of the daily objects and lives of genocide victims, warning the consequences of hate speech and silence before the crime.
“Legacy of hope: The journey of the new generation after genocide” (7-21. July 2025) – Through the personal stories of young survivors and descendants of the victims, showing the power of forgiveness, dignity and construction of communities after the tragedy.
Both exhibitions are the result of cooperation between the Srebrenica Memorial Center, BIRN and the permanent mission of BiH at the UN, with the support of the UN Outreach program.
UN Message: Denial and Education Rejection as Protection Future Crimes
By adopting the resolution and the establishment of the UN, the UN General Assembly has clearly condemned every denial of the Genocide in Srebrenica and to preserve the historical facts through educational systems and teach future generations about this crime.
Srebrenica flower, a symbol of commemoration, with 11 white petals and green in the middle, reminds of the innocence of victims and hope in the future.
The memory of Srebrenica became not only a regional, but also a universal lesson on hatred dangers, silence and denial.
