Gattuso has been battling an incurable disease for a decade: ‘It sometimes drives me crazy’

Italian coach Gennaro Gattuso has become a true favorite of Hajduk Split fans, who has been leading the team with great success since this season.

More or less everything is known about his football and coaching career, but one detail from Gattuso’s life was not known to the public for a long time.

Namely, the famous Italian has been struggling with an incurable disease called ocular myasthenia for more than a decade.

Gattuso spoke about his life with this autoimmune disease for the first time at the end of 2020, after appearing on the sidelines with an eye patch for several games in a row.

“The boys also suffered seeing me like this, I know that, but I’m alive. I’ve had myasthenia for ten years, this is the third time it’s flared up like this, but it will pass and my eye will return to normal,” Gennaro said then while was the coach of Napoli when he came with an eye patch, Daily Mail reports.

Ocular myasthenia is manifested by fatigue and weakness of the skeletal muscles. It is a disease that makes the eyes tired and can cause double vision and droopy eyelids. Problems usually occur at the end of the day or after frequent use of the eyes.

“It’s not just that it looks bad, this condition makes you feel really exhausted, and seeing double 24 hours a day really drives you crazy. Only a crazy person like me would continue,” Gattuso said at the time, then concluded:

“However, this is my life and there are worse things. I know some are already assuming I have a month left to live, but I assure you it’s okay. When I finally die, I want to go to where I lived, to the football field “.
