Greek sports are shrouded in black after the news of the sudden death of Margarita Ekonomopoulou, former volleyball player and vice president of the Board of Directors of the Olympic Sports Center in Athens (OAKA).
As reported by the Greek media, Margarita found on vacation in Thailand. The tragedy happened at the airport itself, at the moment when she was preparing to return to her native Greece. The unfortunate girl suddenly lost consciousness and collapsed, and was soon pronounced dead. The exact cause of death is still unknown and is the subject of an investigation.
Margarita Ekonomopoulou she was born on April 11, 1990. During her rich volleyball career, she performed as a middle blocker, and she left a deep mark in numerous Athenian clubs. She said goodbye to active volleyball in 2022after which she devoted herself to sports diplomacy and work within the OAKA complex.
On the occasion of this great tragedy, the Volleyball Federation of Greece also issued an official statement: President Giorgos Karabetcos, the Board of Directors of the Greek Volleyball Federation and the entire volleyball community express their condolences on the sudden death of Margarita Ekonomopoulou. A volleyball player who played for many Athenian clubs she died at the airport in Thailand, where she was returning from vacation.
The press release added that this news arrived as “bolt out of the blue”not only for volleyball, but also for the entire sports world, considering her high function in OAKA, reports Nezavisne.
