An international scientific conference called “New Horizons of Transport and Communication 2025” was opened in Doboj, organized by the Faculty of Transportation.
Experts from 40 countries discuss digitization and the application of artificial intelligence in different types of traffic, rail transport and the transport of dangerous goods.
Eerie silence on the Doboj railways
The railway station in Doboj, once the second largest hub in the former Yugoslavia, today resembles a depot of old wagons. Passenger trains run infrequently, on lines that can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Plans for modernization exist, but without concrete investments, they will hardly yield tangible results.
The railway is a mirror of the country’s development
The general director of Railways of Republika Srpska, Slađan Jović, points out: “Every day we are working on the procurement of new passenger sets. We have witnessed that Federal Railways has Talgo trains, and ŽRS is planning the same in the near future.”
One of the participants of the conference emphasizes that the railway today represents the backbone of the development of countries throughout Europe and the world.
Borna Abramović from the Faculty of Traffic in Zagreb explains: “As an example in Croatia – in the next five years we will invest two and a half billion euros in infrastructure and one and a half billion in railway vehicles, so that the transport of goods and passengers will be more efficient and profitable.”
Artificial intelligence in transport
In the digital age, the application of artificial intelligence is inevitable in all segments of traffic.
Miroslav Kostadinović, dean of the Faculty of Traffic in Doboj, explains: “It is mostly used in autonomous vehicles. Artificial intelligence is not only for means of transport, but also for the complete infrastructure necessary for the functioning of traffic now and in the future.”
Far from contemporary trends
Judging by the current railway and other transport infrastructure, Bosnia and Herzegovina is still far from modern trends and technologies in traffic. The conference in Doboj emphasizes the urgent need for investments, modernization and application of digital solutions so that transport in BiH follows European standards, writes BHRT.
