Prime Minister Denmark, Mette Frederixen, issued a long-awaited apologies to women with Greenland and their families affected by what she called “systemic discrimination” during the contraception campaign.
During the 1960s and 1970s, thousands of women and girls, even those who had only 12 were subjected to setting contraceptives, as part of the birth control program.
– We can’t change what happened. But we can take responsibility – Frederixen said about this scandal.
– On behalf of Denmark, I want to say sorry, she added, admitting that victims “also experienced physical and psychological damage.”
The birth control program was first revealed in 2022. Thanks to the research podcast called Spiralkampagnen – a spiral campaign.
The device used is known as a spiral and is placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy.
In recent years, many women went public and said that their intrauterine devices (IUDs) had been set up without their knowledge or consent.
Few people were aware of this contraceptive campaign before, and the reports caused a shock and anger.
