The players of Manchester City and Brighton played a draw 1:1 in the 21st round of the English Premier League, in a match that was of great importance to the home team in the fight for the top of the table.
City entered the match under the imperative of victory due to the gap behind the leaders Arsenal, while Brighton sought to continue their good form and stay in the race for places leading to European competitions.
Home coach Pep Guardiola had serious problems in defense, because he could not count on Rúben Dias and Joško Guardiola due to injuries. The opportunity was thus given to 20-year-old debutant Max Alleyne, who was immediately thrust into the starting line-up.
Brighton showed ambition from the start. Already in the 2nd minute, the visitors threatened, but goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma stopped Pascal Groß’s attempt with a great intervention. The Italian also stood out a few minutes later, when he stopped Ferdi Kadioglu’s shot from a good position.
City had the first serious chance in the middle of the first half through Bernardo Silva, but Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was safe.
In the 40th minute, the home team took the lead after VAR intervention. The referee awarded a penalty for a foul on Jeremy Doku, and Erling Haaland scored the 20th goal of the season in the Premier League.
City went into the break with the lead, but the continuation brought a different picture. Already at the beginning of the second half, Bernardo Silva hit the post, and the missed opportunity was soon punished.
In the 60th minute, Brighton equalized. After a good action on the left side, Kaoru Mitoma hits the opposite corner with a precise shot for 1:1.
After the goal, the guests were closer to a complete turnaround, but they did not take advantage of several possible opportunities. On the other hand, City tried to score the winning goal until the end of the match, but Brighton’s defense remained organized and disciplined.
With this draw, Manchester City reached 43 points, five points behind Arsenal and a game more, while Brighton now has 29 points and is in tenth position in the table.
In the next round, City hosts city rival Manchester United, while Brighton welcomes Bournemouth to their home ground.
