The current world champion in rapid and blitz chess, Magnus Carlsen, lost his title even before the fight broke out at the current planetary competition in New York, and he was kicked out of the tournament because of – jeans.
Despite the fine of 200 dollars and the warning of an even more drastic punishment, the Norwegian did not want to comply with the rules of the International Chess Federation on dressing, so he ended his participation in the ninth round by force of circumstances.

“I’m pretty tired of FIDE, so I don’t want anything to do with it anymore. I want nothing to do with them. Apologies to everyone at home, maybe it’s a stupid principle, but I don’t think it’s any kind of fun. I said I don’t want to bother changing clothes now, but I can change by tomorrow, that’s fine. But they did not want to compromise. I got to the point where I was pretty upset about FIDE, so I didn’t want to give in either. And that’s how it is,” added Carlsen.
FIDE also spoke out, reminding the valid dress code in an official statement, but also cited the example of another competitor, Ian Nepomnjašči, who agreed to take off his sneakers and put on the prescribed footwear.
