The consumption of antibiotics in BiH, as well as in other Balkan countries, exceeds the average of EU countries, and their use increased significantly during the corona virus pandemic, it was pointed out at the round table “Together we are building awareness of antimicrobial resistance” in Sarajevo on the occasion of the World Awareness Week on the resistance of microorganisms to drugs.
At the panel discussion, in which representatives of the Food Safety Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the academic community and the World Health Organization participated, it was pointed out that it is increasingly difficult to treat infections caused by resistant bacteria.
It was also pointed out that the excessive use and abuse of antibiotics contributes to the spread of antimicrobial resistance, that is, the ability of microorganisms to develop resistance to antimicrobial drugs used in the treatment of infections, announced the Food Safety Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The announcement emphasized that resistance to antimicrobial drugs is developing not only in human medicine but also in agriculture, primarily in livestock, which is why a unified and coordinated approach is needed.
At the meeting, it was pointed out that the development of new antibiotics is a slow, long-term and financially demanding process, which further complicates the fight against antimicrobial resistance, and that Bosnia and Herzegovina does not have an adopted program for the fight against the resistance of microorganisms to drugs.
The Director of the Agency, Sanin Tanković, emphasized the importance of multidisciplinary action and pointed out that the application of a unified health approach is the only adequate response to the growing global threat to human health caused by antimicrobial resistance, writes NOISE.
