In Neusiedl am Steinfeld, in the lower Austria, the works on the expansion of the largest closed tank of drinking water in the world are in full. The project is a key part of the “Vienna Water 2050” strategy, which is prepared for the growth of the population and the challenges of climate change.
“Water supply security for the Viennese is my highest priority. We make the best and state-of-the-art system, every year we are investing up to 100m euros in water infrastructure,” Jürgen Czernohorszky, a member of the Vienna Government for Climate Affairs, during the construction site tour.
The tank has four huge chambers with a capacity of about 600 million liters of water. After enlargement, the capacity will reach as much a billion liters of water, which is an increase of about 70 percent. The comparison works, one million cubic meters of water is enough to completely flood the Viennese Cathedral Stephansd. Only the first phase, which will last until the end of 2028. year, includes the construction of two new chambers with a capacity of 200 million liters. In the second phase, two more chambers and renewal of the existing ones are envisaged.
The facility is connected to the I. high-cost water line, which means that the water flows to Vienna without using pumps. When the works are completed, the Viennese system of 31 tanks will be able to store about two billion liters of drinking water.
