Stores “Kmart” and “Target” published a request for the recall of the product, which was found to contain traces of asbestos in some samples.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said there was a low risk that asbestos could become airborne or be small enough to be inhaled.
“School inspections are ongoing and could last for days,” the Ministry of Education announced.
They added that previous air tests in all schools showed negative results for asbestos.
The government made the decision after several schools and pre-schools in the region were fully or partially closed on Friday, following warnings about the risks of asbestos in children’s sand.
The BBC reports that schools in New Zealand have also been closed due to fear of sand products.
