Six people armed with military-grade weapons and explosives carried out a spectacular robbery of a gold processing laboratory in Lyon on Thursday, injuring five employees, French authorities said.
The robbers blew up the entrance to the company Pourquery Laboratories and took loot worth about 12 million euros ($13.8 million). The police soon arrested them in the nearby town of Venissieux and confiscated weapons and explosives.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez praised the police for their “speed and determination” in their action.
The attack comes after a series of spectacular thefts in France, including the recent break-in at the Louvre and the theft of gold from the Natural History Museum in Paris, which has raised concerns about the security of the country’s cultural and industrial facilities.
