Alonso admitted that feelings after the game were mixed, but that pride outweighed disappointment.
“There is a mix of emotions – on the one hand, disappointment because we didn’t manage to win the title, but also pride that the team showed character. We fought until the end. The final was very even, with different phases. The team tried until the very end and was very close,” said Alonso.
He also analyzed the tactical approach to the game in more detail.
“The team had a great attitude and great commitment. I knew there would be moments when we would have to hold on without the ball, but also that we had to believe in what we were doing. In the first 30 minutes, we didn’t concede anything. A lot happened in a very short time.
In the second half, we started playing well on the left side with Vinny. After the rebound, we conceded a goal for 3:2 and I was convinced that we would have opportunities to equalize. We lacked the precision to get to the penalties.”
The Spanish strategist especially praised the game of the Brazilian striker.
“Up until the 85th minute, Vinicius was very good, he asked for a change due to fatigue, there was a lot of humidity. He was key, the goal was spectacular and he represented a big threat in his side.
