Residents of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina have been witnessing an almost identical scenario for years, with the arrival of spring, work begins, panels are replaced or “patched”, and already after the first serious winter, the problems return.
Potholes in the walkway and cracked or broken flagstones are a daily challenge for pedestrians. Citizens, as well as numerous tourists, are forced to walk with extra caution, especially in winter and rainy days, when water accumulates in the damage and creates puddles. In addition to spoiling the appearance of one of the most representative streets in the city, these conditions also increase the risk of slipping and injury.
Citizens are increasingly asking the question whether the problem is in the quality of the installed material, the way the panels are installed, a bad foundation or in the supervision of the work. Regardless of the cause, it is clear that the current approach does not produce long-term results.
At a time when city authorities often refer to the development of tourism, improvement of the quality of life and European standards of public space planning, the state of the main pedestrian zone remains one of the most obvious examples of the discrepancy between the supposed goals and the reality on the ground.
