Club SSV Reutlingen 05, which competes in Germany’s fifth division, expressed its deepest condolences on the loss of the young midfielder.
“Last weekend we received the terrible news that our player Luca Meixner passed away suddenly at only 22 years old,” they said in their statement. The club expressed its solidarity with his family and friends, asking the public to respect their privacy at this difficult time.
“The entire family of SSV is deeply shaken,” added the club. “His teammates, management and staff are grieving along with his loved ones. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
After his death, the club held a memorial service in his honor, where team members lit a torch and held up a banner reading “Rest in Peace.”
Also, a framed picture of Meixner with a candle was placed near the club building, as a permanent memorial to the young player.
Meixner joined SSV Reutlingen 05 in 2021, and began his football career in the club’s youth department.
