As announced on social networks by Dr. Edhem Čustović, Mostar, dr. Svjetlana Tišma-Dupanović, cardiologist and pediatrician, successfully implanted the patient with a two-chamber pacemaker directly in the heart cavities — in the atrium and the ventricle — which synchronically stimulate the heart to work properly.
“This is the first such operation performed in Florida, and at the same time it represents a major advance in the treatment of heart disease, especially for patients with heart rhythm disorders and weaker pumping function of the heart. Traditional pacemakers are placed under the skin of the chest, and the wires pass through the veins to the heart. The new technology, applied by Dr. Tišma-Dupanović, allows the device to be directly implanted inside the heart — without the wires that they pass through the blood vessels. This two-chamber (biventricular) pacemaker synchronizes the work of the atria and ventricles, which achieves a more regular rhythm and greater blood pumping efficiency,” wrote Čustović.
dr. Tišma-Dupanović was born in Mostar, and graduated in medicine from the University of Sarajevo in 1987. After that, she devoted herself to pediatrics and cardiology, and became one of the most respected experts in the field of pediatric electrophysiology — the branch of medicine that deals with heart rhythm disorders in children and adolescents.
Today, she serves as the director of the Electrophysiology Service at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando (Florida), where she leads a team that deals with the implantation of advanced cardiac devices and the research of new therapeutic technologies.
In addition to rich clinical practice, dr. Tišma-Dupanović is the author of numerous professional works and a lecturer at international congresses.
