Portugal and parts of Spain faced extreme weather conditions from Storm Claudia, which reached parts of Britain and Ireland on Saturday.
On Thursday, rescuers found the bodies of an elderly couple in their flooded home in Fernao Ferra, across the Tagus River from Lisbon. Apparently, they were sleeping and were unable to escape because the water rose during the night.

Remote footage posted online showed the tornado destroying the camp, and regional civil protection commander Vitor Vaz Pinto said an 85-year-old British woman was killed.
Twenty-eight people were injured in a nearby hotel, two of whom are in hospital with serious injuries, he said.
The Portuguese weather service IPMA has placed the entire Algarve and the districts of Beja and Setubal on the second highest level of alert.
Strong winds and heavy rain have caused severe flooding in Monmouth, south Wales. The authorities declared a state of emergency early on Saturday, warning the population of a significant risk to life.
Laura Anne Jones, MP for South East Wales, wrote on her Xu profile that it was “heartbreaking to see the destruction of homes and businesses” and thanked everyone who helped to rescue and secure the area.

In addition to flooding, the storm created an unusual sight along the coast of Dublin – a huge amount of sea foam. This natural phenomenon, which is created by the strong foaming of sea water, was carried by the wind to the land not far from Loughshinny, creating scenes that surprised even the oldest inhabitants.
