23 people were injured in the accident, one of them seriously, writes the Hungarian Index.
Professional firefighters from Szolnok, an ambulance and a rescue helicopter were immediately sent to the scene. Firefighters secured the vehicle by turning off the electricity, removed the fallen tree and helped treat the injured. The operational disaster management service of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok county also participated in the intervention.
According to available information, a total of 28 people participated in the accident. Of the 27 passengers on the bus and one pedestrian who managed to avoid the vehicle at the last moment, five escaped without injury. 22 people suffered minor injuries, including a pedestrian, while one person is in critical condition. The school room where the bus hit was closed for safety reasons, but the rest of the building did not need to be evacuated.
The Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok police said that the section of the road where the accident happened was partially restricted. The Szolnok Police Department launched an investigation for negligently causing a traffic accident with mass casualties in order to determine all the circumstances that led to this event.
Zsolt Hegyi, executive director of the MÁV-group, also reacted to the accident via his Facebook page, confirming that the bus driver was taken to the hospital for observation.
“We are trying to collect and share as much credible information as possible with the public as quickly as possible, but now the priority is taking care of the injured and establishing traffic order,” said Hegyi. The mayor of Szolnok, Mihály Györfi, also spoke out, stating that all competent services – ambulance, fire brigade and police – are constantly working at the scene.
