Atlas will first be available to MacOS users, with support for Windows, iOS and Android expected soon. According to announcements, the browser will be available for free to all users at launch.
Search engines powered by artificial intelligence have become one of the key areas of the technology industry, given the increasing influence of AI chatbots and agents on the way people perform tasks online. OpenAI joins startups like Perplexity’s Comet and The Browser Company’s Dia, while both Google and Microsoft have implemented AI functionality in Chrome and Edge.
Ben Goodger, principal engineer for Atlas at OpenAI, explained that ChatGPT Atlas users can directly interact with their search results, similar to Google’s AI mode or other AI search engines. A special sidecar function allows users to have the context of all the information on the screen, making it easier to work with text, files and links without the need for additional copying.
Atlas also includes an “agent mode,” which allows users to ask ChatGPT to perform certain browser tasks on their behalf. This functionality will be available to ChatGPT users using the Plus, Pro or Business packages at launch.
OpenAI points out that ChatGPT is a key component of the company’s first browser, laying the groundwork for a new era of artificial intelligence-powered internet browsing.
